History

The Almaz-Antey Buk-M3 is a Russian self-propelled medium-range surface-to-air missile system developed as the latest generation of the Buk family. It is intended to engage aircraft, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and other airborne threats while accompanying mobile ground formations.

The Buk-M3 introduces enclosed transport-launch containers and increases the ready missile load of the 9A317M transporter erector launcher and radar to six missiles. Supplied technical sources report an engagement range of up to 70 km and an engagement altitude reaching 35 km.

Development

The Buk family originated as the successor to the Soviet 2K12 Kub surface-to-air missile system. The original 9K37 Buk introduced self-propelled launcher vehicles with their own fire-control radar, allowing a Buk formation to engage several targets from different directions instead of relying entirely on one centralized engagement radar. The Buk-M3 configuration differs visibly from the externally mounted missiles of previous Buk versions. Its launcher carries missiles in sealed transport-launch containers. Design

The Buk-M3 is a mobile air-defense complex composed of several tracked vehicles that perform command, radar, missile-launch and support functions. The architecture continues the Buk concept of distributing engagement capability among mobile vehicles rather than concentrating all functions in a single fixed installation.

Launcher and battery organization

According to the supplied Army Recognition data, a Buk-M3 missile battery includes two 9A317M transporter erector launcher and radar vehicles and one 9A316M transporter erector launcher or loader-launcher vehicle. Radar and engagement equipment

Army Recognition describes the missile as using inertial guidance during the mid-course phase with radio-datalink corrections and terminal semi-active radar homing. The same source states that the missile carries a high-explosive fragmentation warhead.

Multiple supplied sources give the Buk-M3 a maximum engagement range of approximately 70 km. UNITED24 Media reports an engagement envelope from about 2.5 to 70 km and an altitude range from approximately 15 m to 35 km. Army Recognition provides the same range and altitude limits and states that targets traveling at speeds of up to 3,000 m/s can be engaged.

Mobility

The 9A317M is mounted on a tracked armored chassis. Army Recognition identifies the Buk-M3 chassis as the GM-569A and describes it as powered by a V-46 multifuel diesel engine rated at 710 hp. The same source gives a maximum road speed of 70 km/h and a road range of 500 km.

The source describes the running gear as having six dual road wheels on each side, a rear drive sprocket, a front idler and four return rollers. It also describes hydro-mechanical transmission and electro-hydraulic control. The tracked configuration allows the Buk-M3 to accompany mechanized and armored formations rather than operating only from prepared fixed positions.

The Army Recognition data sheet gives a crew of four for the launcher vehicle. It states that the vehicle is protected against small-arms fire and shell fragments.

Operational history

The Buk-M3 has been deployed by Russian forces during the Russia-Ukraine war. Russian official statements reproduced by Military Watch Magazine claimed that a Buk-M3 unit intercepted a projectile identified as a HIMARS rocket at a distance exceeding 30 km. This is an attributed Russian Ministry of Defense claim rather than independently verified evidence in the supplied material.

Ukrainian forces have also repeatedly targeted Buk-M3 components. On November 29, 2024, Militarnyi reported that the Ukrainian 412th Separate Battalion of Unmanned Systems Nemesis detected and struck a Russian 9S36M Buk-M3 radar in the Zaporizhzhia direction. The report stated that two bombs were dropped by a heavy unmanned aircraft. The available thermal imagery did not allow the extent of the resulting damage to be determined precisely.

The same report stated that the unit had previously attacked another Buk-M3 radar and two Buk-M3 missile launchers. These incidents demonstrate the operational importance of both launch vehicles and radar components within the distributed Buk-M3 system.

In September 2026, the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces reported that the Balista unmanned-systems unit detected and struck Russian S-300 and Buk-M3 air-defense systems. According to the supplied report, a reconnaissance unmanned aircraft located the targets during aerial reconnaissance, after which their coordinates were used for strikes by loitering munitions. The published imagery did not allow the precise level of damage to the Buk-M3 to be established.
