The History of Barrett REC7 (Reliable Carbine 2007)
Barrett Firearms Manufacturing is best known for its massive .50 caliber M82 semi-automatic anti-material rifle system, which is in service with several militaries and law enforcement forces around the world, including the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. However, with the introduction of the "M468", the company eventually entered the automatic rifle market, eventually producing around 2,025 of them.
The system is based on the M4 carbine for close range work and also holds the Remington 6.8 SPC rimless cartridge. The 6.8mm SPC was designed in 2002 and developed with input from U.S. Army Special Operations Command as an intermediate cartridge between the 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62mm rounds.
The 6.8mm SPC is expected to provide better stopping power and engagement range than the original 5.56mm cartridge, while maintaining full power and the ability to drop more full length than the 7.62mm cartridge. The 6.8mm SPC retains roughly the same general appearance as the 5.56mm cartridge, its neck shape (although the two still have distinct designs when viewed side by side), and is difficult to be a replacement for a NATO cartridge - several rifle designs New cartridges have been or are being tested.
The Barrett M468 automatic weapon was followed by the much improved Barret REC7 - its name was "Reliability-Enhanced Carbine, 2007".
Carbines have grown in popularity since the new millennium, when compact firearms have proven to be a necessity for urban combat around the world. There are various forms of carbines available, many of which are based on existing systems of full-length rifles (as they were in the 1800s and 1900s). One of the most popular Western products is the M4 carbine, itself developed as a compact version of the long-standing American M16 assault rifle. Actions in Afghanistan and Iraq over the past decade have proven that the M4 is popular with recreational and hardcore shooters in the civilian market.
The M4 carbine has the same assault rifle strike power as the M16 (or similar) base, while still being able to achieve a compact size - usually by using a collapsible stock with a shorter barrel with a handguard assembly. Accessories complete the system, and the new generation airframe now comes standard with accessory "rails" for attaching various optics, lights and sights - all designed to expand the tactical capability and accuracy of the warfighter in tight Navigate within the space to cleanse the enemy.
Barrett introduced their new REC7 system in 2007 as a compact carbine assault weapon based on a proven and powerful internal action that uses fewer moving parts and therefore promotes low maintenance. The design is familiar to users of previous Armalite (or "AR") products, such as the AR-15 (which gave rise to the military-grade M16), and is constructed of high-quality steel, aluminum, and plastic. The weapon's reliability is a key selling point, and it's closely tied to the existing line of AR weapons.
The use of a short-stroke gas piston sets the REC7 apart from the previous M4, and features a full Barrett design that represents a one-piece steel rod assembly.
The Barret REC7 also has an external configuration similar to previous AR automatic weapons. The two-piece receiver (upper and lower) includes the necessary internal working parts, including the feeder, chamber, pins, springs, gun mount and trigger group. The trigger is protected by an elongated guard suitable for gloved hands, located in front of the angled, ergonomically designed pistol grip. The flex magazine is deployed in the normal way in front of the trigger group, while the pull handle is the same "T" pull type managed in previous AR products - this one is mounted at the rear end of the upper receiver. As a gas-powered weapon, the cylinder is mounted on the front of the rifle above the barrel and is wrapped by a standard handguard.
The stock itself is accessible without removing the handguard itself, so any attached accessories remain in place, no need to "zero" back to the exact shape. A small section of exposed barrel extends forward a short distance and is covered by a slotted flash suppressor/suppressor (Mil Spec A2). The stock is reminiscent of the M4 carbine - a skeletal light folding assembly (Magpul MOE) with six positions that can be adjusted to the shooter's needs. The REC7 can accommodate accessories on its various rail sections, including the long tube section on top of the receiver and the handguard. There are additional attachment points on the front and under the handguard.
This allows the weapon to use different laser pointers, optics, grips and tactical lights as needed.
The trims of the REC7 series are made of heavy duty steel required for severe, continuous use. The gas block itself is chrome-lined for durability, as is the hammer-forged barrel assembly. The stock and breech are made of steel, the latter designed for the REC7 rifle series.
Upper and lower receiver assemblies are hard-coated anodized aluminum.
While equipped for the ubiquitous NATO standard 5.56x45mm cartridge, the REC7 is primarily known for supporting the aforementioned 6.8 SPC cartridge. It should be noted that the 6.8 SPC uses a completely different proprietary steel magazine design, while the REC7 feeds 10- and 30-round counter magazines. Barrett's REC7 comes with 2 x 30-round curved magazines, each with a bevel for easy handling. There are also two different barrel lengths of 8" or 16", which directly reflect the overall length of the gun. The effective range is about 600 meters for point targets and up to 800 meters for area targets.
Aiming is via a standard front and rear iron arrangement, although obviously this can be improved by using optics as needed.
The Barrett REC7 could potentially replace the US military's M4 carbine and compete with several other well-known systems in a crowded field. The product was submitted to U.S. Army authorities in late 2008.
