History

The McMillan M86 (now Harris) was designed with military and security forces in mind to reliably and consistently deliver lethal fire over long distances in any climate or operating condition. The M86 is in service with the U.S.

Navy SEALs and Delta Force, and the first 460 or so of these systems are marked as such. Harris Gunworks acquired McMillan in 1995 and changed the official name of the M86 to reflect the move.

The M86 features McMillan engineering throughout, including McMillan-based mechanics, an adjustable McMillan McHale fiberglass composite stock with recoil pads, and a McMillan Competition Grade Heavy Duty Contoured Precision Barrel. The rifle ended up in a variety of calibers, including 7mm Remington Magnum, 7.62x51mm NATO, .300 Winchester Magnum,.

30-06 Springfield and . 338 Lapua Magnum cartridge. Depending on the caliber selected, the number of magazines differs from 3- (.300 Win Mag), 4- (.308 and .30-06), 5- and 10-round interchangeable magazines.

The types of magazines offered are either internal magazines or traditional detachable boxes. As it turns out, the optics options are plentiful, including flashlights, low light, and night vision goggles.

Despite its size, the M86 has a relatively low operating weight thanks to its stock of fiberglass composites. An adjustable bipod (with full tilt and pan controls) is optional, as is a detachable stock. Interestingly, the basic weapons are not seen.

From the outside, the M86 has a clean and simple design. A near vertical pistol grip is integrated into the stock and frame. The bolt action lever is placed on the right side of the fuselage, just below the separate trigger group.

The barrel looks featureless, extending forward from the angular body, while almost any type of optics can be fitted to the weapon. An optional bipod can be folded back against the gun body for easy portability.
