History of the McMillan TAC-338

The McMillan TAC-338 is a professional sniper rifle designed to exacting specifications with long-range lethality and accuracy in mind. The weapon is part of the McMillan TAC-300 series of rifles, which includes the basic TAC-300, TAC-308, TAC-338 and the updated TAC-416 (.416 Barrett).

The series has grown into a field-proven product and is actually used by a variety of armed forces including the world-renowned US Navy SEALs. The TAC-50 is an offshoot of the TAC product line for the overpowered .50 BMG round as a long-range anti-personnel/anti-material rifle platform.

However, to provide precision anti-personnel services in a more compact product, the adaptable McMillan TAC-338 is the weapon of choice.

The TAC-338 is designed for .338 Lapua Magnum or .338 Norma Magnum cartridges and features a durable matte stainless steel/match grade, free-floating, hand-assembled barrel with a length of 26.5 inches. The barrel is Dura-Coat coated with corrosion resistant chemical NP3 nickel plating.

A perforated muzzle brake is standard mounted on the breech end of the barrel, although a threaded cap is an option. The free-floating stock has an integrated grip and adjustable cheeks for comfort during extended viewing duties. The TAC-338 is available in two different market forms - the TAC-338A with a conventional detachable magazine feeder and the TAC-338B with a hinged base plate for easy unloading.

The mounting position above the receiver allows the addition of rail assemblies, thus in turn supporting different optics. An optional adjustable bipod can be attached to the very front of the front end to add extra support to the rifle station and maintain the shooter's compact prone position. An optional sling can be attached for easy transport when hard or soft suitcases are prohibited.

The extended trigger ring size is perfect for gloved hands, and the large magazine release is easily accessible from the launcher's position. The TAC-338 comes with a 3-pound trigger pull, but is adjustable between 2.5 and 4.5 pounds, and fires from a 5-round magazine. The system is manually operated via a bolt lever mounted on the right side of the receiver.

When operating the lever, the spent cartridge will pop out to this side.

Basic TAC-338 with Leupold Mk 4 3-10x40mm M1 Mil Dot scope in a Pelican 1750 series housing. The bipod is a Harris HEBR swivel bipod, adjustable between 6" and 9". The shoulder straps are faux leather. The Night Force 8-32x56mm Mil Dot scope is available through McMillan as an optional upgrade, as is the McCann Night Vision Rail Mount and Jewell Trigger System.

Another add-on is the Elite Iron Series Suppressor, which does not "mute" the weapon but delays part of its sound output signal.
