History of Harris M96
Harris Gunworks has a long history of making precision rifles that bear his name, including the M96 series. The M96 is a military grade semi-automatic action rifle designed as an anti-matter/anti-personnel solution. It uses a gas powered system and can target distances up to 5,000 feet through the use of mounted day/night optics (with iron sights installed as a backup). The weapon holds a large 12.7x99mm NATO (.50 BMG) cartridge and is fed from a 5-round detachable magazine.
The magazine is just in front of the trigger group.
Like most weapons in this class, the M96 is tall and long, weighing 29 pounds (with an empty magazine) and measuring 1,473 mm in length. The heavy duty barrel measures 736 mm (29 in).
The structure is made of steel and aluminum (sold as "aircraft grade"), both for field use and as a relative weight saving measure. To handle the massive recoil when firing the 12.7mm bullet, the rifle is usually fired from the prone position and has a large muzzle brake with multiple slots.
The overall configuration of the weapon is traditional, with the action in front of the shoulder rest. As usual, the pistol grip is mounted on the bottom, and the scope mounting arm above the receiver doubles as a carrying handle. The gas cylinder is located above the barrel. The shoulder rest is solid but adjustable to fit the lines of the rectangular receiver.
The wide, straight box magazine is detachable.
Harris M96s are used by both the US and Malaysian armed forces. Optional accessories for this product include a laser rangefinder, close-up lens and 4-16x First Plane Mil optics.
