The Remington Model 700 (M700) rifle series appears in civilian, police and military guises. Production by Remington Arms began in 1962 and continues today. The system fires from a variety of ammunition types based on model and barrel. The US Army's M24 Sniper Weapon System (SWS) and US Marine Corps' M40 rifles are both militarized forms of this civilian design.
Ammunition types fired from various Model 700 rifle versions (depending on model) include the .17 Remington, .17 Remington Fireball, .204 Ruger, .220 Swift, .221 Remington Fireball, .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Win, 6mm Remington, 6.8mm SPC, .25-06 Remington, .264 Win Mag, .270 Winchester, .270 WSM, .280 Remington, 7mm-08 Remington, 7mm Remington Mag, 7mm RUM, .30-06, .308 Win, .300 WSM, .300 Win Mag, .300 RUM, .338 RUM, .338 Win Mag, .35 Whelen, .375 H&H and .375 RUM.
Ammunition is fed via 2-lug bolt-action from a 3-, 4-, 5- or 6-round internal magazine. Detachable magazines might be encountered with specialized security and military versions. Civilian versions of the rifle include the Model 700 ADL, BDL and CDL while police versions encompass two major products in the 700P and 700P (LTR), the main difference in each of the police models being the type of barrel.
The base Model 700 weighs in unloaded at approximately 6lb, 12oz. Overall length measures in at 1,055mm with barrel lengths numbering 22, 24 and 26 inches. Accessories include a bipod, shoulder sling and various telescopic sights.
