Milkor Mk-4 UBGL

History

With a long history in the design, development and production of excellent grenade launchers, Milkor Pty Ltd of South Africa has transferred its expertise to the resulting Hanger launcher market: 40mm Mk-4 UBGL ("under-barrel grenade launcher"). As enshrined in certain automatic rifles such as the American Colt M16, Heckler & Koch G3 and Soviet/Russian AK-47 types, the UBGL is designed to accommodate these gaming systems.

As such, the Mk-4 can be attached to such assault weapons via Picatinny or STANAG style accessory rails or more custom mounting solutions. UBGL was added to Milkor's product range in 2006.

The ability of the modern warfighter to combine grenade firing solutions is unmatched, transforming standard infantry into their own fire support grenadier. The nature of this under-barrel launcher allows the size of the primary weapon to be controlled, and the launcher is attacked using the existing magazine as a handle. The Mk-4 is cylindrical in appearance, tapering towards the muzzle. The mount is on the top, usually under the handguard of the host weapon.

To load/reload, the front of the launcher must swing out to reveal the breech. The UBGL is considered a lightweight structure that adds little to the weight of existing fully loaded weapons. The barrel is made of steel for strength and wear resistance, and is internally rifled for accuracy.

The system uses the widely accepted low velocity 40mm grenade. These shells also offer a variety of payload/warhead types, including lethal, non-lethal and tactical competition. If necessary, the entire Mk-4 unit can be quickly removed using a simple release clip.

The weapon can also be fired as a standalone system if desired.

Due to the intriguing nature of the grenade launcher, the Mk-4 has the minimum range listed as well as the maximum range for operator safety. The minimum range is 30 meters, and the effective range is up to 250 meters, but it can also reach 350 meters in some cases. A well-trained/experienced operator can maintain a rate of fire of six rounds per minute.

Aiming is carried out with a saddle sighting device, but a ladder and aiming point system can also be used.
