JP Aerospace Hazel

History

Hazel is a hypersonic vehicle concept presented by JP Aerospace for launch from a high-altitude airship. In September 2026, the organization released computer-generated still images showing the proposed vehicle separating from a SuperTandem airship.

The released material came from an upcoming Hazel concept video and did not document a physical flight or test. No Hazel test vehicle had been publicly reported as built or flown, and JP Aerospace had not announced a schedule for construction, testing, or launch.

Hazel is associated with JP Aerospace's wider effort to explore unconventional routes to high altitude and space using lighter-than-air vehicles rather than a conventional rocket-only architecture.

Concept reveal

JP Aerospace president John Powell shared still images from the planned Hazel video in September 2026. The computer-generated material depicts a dark, wing-shaped vehicle dropping away from a SuperTandem high-altitude airship. The imagery therefore represents a proposed configuration rather than footage of an actual Hazel vehicle.

The concept was reported by Defence Blog, which stated that JP Aerospace had not disclosed technical specifications, funding sources, a construction schedule, or a launch date for Hazel.

JP Aerospace background

JP Aerospace is a volunteer-run organization that has pursued an Airship to Orbit concept for decades. Its broader plan envisages lighter-than-air vehicles carrying people and cargo to high altitude, with later stages intended to support further acceleration toward space.

An earlier JP Aerospace Tandem airship, using two balloons joined by a 30 ft carbon-fiber truss, reached 95,085 ft over Nevada's Black Rock Desert in October 2011. This achievement involved an earlier airship design and does not constitute a Hazel test.

Design

The available Hazel imagery shows a wing-shaped vehicle carried beneath or between the structures of the SuperTandem high-altitude airship before release. The concept therefore uses an air-launch arrangement in which the carrier airship would bring Hazel to high altitude before separation.

No confirmed dimensions, mass, propulsion system, materials, speed, range, crew arrangement, payload, guidance system, or thermal-protection details have been disclosed in the supplied material. The released images do not establish the configuration of any eventual physical prototype.
