History
Sky Sentinel is a Ukrainian robotic air-defense turret developed to intercept drones with a heavy machine gun and automated fire-control system. It can receive radar information, acquire and track a target, calculate a firing solution, and aim the weapon.
The system was created in response to Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine. Its intended targets include reconnaissance drones, FPV drones, Shahed-type attack drones, and other small aerial threats.
Sky Sentinel entered combat testing before preparations for serial production began in 2025. During 2026, the system was deployed by a private air-defense operator and delivered to a Ukrainian military unit protecting Sumy Oblast.
Development and testing
The project became publicly known in May 2025. Ukrainian engineers had developed and tested the turret mechanics in Ukraine, including at training grounds and under combat conditions. According to a May 2025 report, one prototype had already destroyed four Shahed drones.
The developers identified mechanical play as a major engineering problem. A movement of approximately one millimetre within the mechanism could produce an aiming error of several tens of metres at engagement distance. The turret therefore required a drive system that could rotate and elevate the weapon with minimal mechanical play while also resisting machine-gun recoil.
The mechanical system was developed in Ukraine. The fire-control software was also written by Ukrainian engineers. However, available reports state that the optical equipment and rangefinders were obtained from foreign suppliers because suitable domestic equivalents were unavailable.
In 2025, the development team was preparing for serial production and intended to increase output to dozens of units per month. The reported price was approximately US$150,000 per turret. Developers estimated that between 10 and 30 systems would be required to provide effective coverage for a city.
A detailed technical account reported that the prototype could engage targets considerably smaller than a Shahed drone. In December 2025, another account stated that six Shahed-136 drones had been destroyed during early combat testing. The difference may reflect additional engagements after the earlier report, but the available material does not establish this conclusively.
Deployment
In April 2026, Sky Sentinel was reported in a static configuration on elevated structures. The privately owned company Carmine Sky operated the systems as part of an initiative to involve private organizations in Ukrainian air defense. A deployment report described automated target acquisition combined with a remote operator who retained the decision to engage. This differs from the fully autonomous firing sequence described in the initial 2025 reports and indicates that control arrangements may depend on the deployment configuration or operating rules.
In August 2026, a batch of Ukrainian-made Sky Sentinel turrets was delivered to an air-defense unit protecting Sumy Oblast. Funding was combined from the regional budget, the UNITED24 platform, and the private sector. The unit planned to place some systems on duty immediately and the remainder within three days.
Design
Sky Sentinel consists of a powered robotic mount, a heavy machine gun, optical equipment, rangefinding devices, and computerized fire-control software. The mount can rotate through 360 degrees and elevate the weapon to follow aerial targets. Systems have been shown in trailer-mounted and static elevated installations.
Target acquisition and fire control
The system can use radar data to begin an engagement. Its sensors and software then detect and identify the target, establish a track, estimate its speed and flight path, and calculate where the projectile and target should intersect. The calculation accounts for factors including wind resistance and must be updated in real time.
Target classification is intended to distinguish drones from birds and other non-hostile objects. Optical tracking must maintain a visual lock during the engagement. Ukrainian military personnel reported in 2026 that the system calculated the required aiming lead within a fraction of a second, with a claimed error of no more than one metre. They also stated that some targets had been destroyed with five rounds. These figures are operational claims rather than independently verified specifications.
Early descriptions presented Sky Sentinel as capable of completing detection, tracking, aiming, and firing without manual aiming. The static system reported in April 2026 instead used automated acquisition while leaving authorization to fire with a remotely located operator. Commercial game controllers were reportedly used as part of the remote-control equipment.
Armament
The best-documented configuration carries a 12.7 mm M2 Browning heavy machine gun firing conventional ammunition. A 2026 deployment report also identified M2 or M3 machine-gun installations. The use of standard ammunition avoids the need for a guided interceptor for each target.
The maximum engagement range is classified. Published descriptions cite an effective range of approximately 1,500 m for the M2 Browning against aerial targets, but this should not be interpreted as a confirmed maximum range for every Sky Sentinel configuration.
Engagement capability
The developers stated that Sky Sentinel could engage small targets travelling at 200, 400, or as much as 800 km/h. Reported target classes include FPV drones, reconnaissance UAVs, Shahed-type attack drones, and the jet-powered Geran-3 and Geran-4.
The stated performance could theoretically permit engagements against subsonic cruise missiles such as the Kalibr and Kh-101 when they enter the weapon's effective envelope. This is a claimed or theoretical capability. The available sources do not document a confirmed interception of a cruise missile.
Operational history
Prototype systems were used in combat before May 2025 and were credited with destroying Russian Shahed drones. Public reports gave totals of four destroyed drones in May and six by December, although the relationship between those figures was not explained.
Carmine Sky operated Sky Sentinel in Ukraine's private air-defense initiative by April 2026. The company later claimed an effectiveness rate of 85 percent, but the available information does not define the test conditions, number of engagements, or method used to calculate that percentage.
The batch delivered to Sumy Oblast in August 2026 was assigned to a Ukrainian anti-aircraft machine-gun battalion. Military personnel stated that the systems could counter several UAV types, including jet-powered threats, and could potentially engage cruise missiles under suitable conditions. The number of delivered turrets was not disclosed.
