History

The GM Defense EPIQ is a hybrid power system designed to supply military command-and-control nodes while reducing their dependence on continuously running diesel generators.

During Project Convergence Capstone 6 in 2026, EPIQ powered two command nodes operated by the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division at Fort Irwin, California. The system supported mission-critical loads using battery power alone for periods of approximately three to eight hours.

The demonstration addressed the growing electrical demands of expeditionary command posts. Their computers, communications equipment, intelligence systems, fires systems, networks, and sustainment tools require dependable power in field conditions.

Project Convergence Capstone 6

The Army evaluated EPIQ as part of experimentation associated with Next Generation Command and Control, or NGC2. The participating command nodes came from the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, and were tested under the terrain and climate conditions of Fort Irwin.

According to the available test report, the two nodes carried electrical loads ranging from 9 to 30 kilowatts. The generator remained off while the batteries supplied the load and was started when recharging was required.

Design

EPIQ combines battery storage with a generator. Instead of operating the generator continuously, the system can power connected command equipment from its batteries and use the generator intermittently to restore their charge.

This operating method reduces the time during which the generator produces engine noise and heat. Lower acoustic and thermal signatures can make a field command post more difficult to detect using listening equipment or thermal sensors. Reduced generator operating time can also decrease fuel consumption and mechanical wear.

The demonstrated electrical load included division- and brigade-level command-and-control functions, intelligence systems, fires systems, network equipment, and sustainment systems. Available information does not identify the battery chemistry, energy capacity, generator rating, dimensions, weight, or transport configuration.

Testing and program status

EPIQ was physically demonstrated with two U.S. Army command nodes during Project Convergence Capstone 6 in 2026. Battery-only operating periods varied with the connected load and lasted approximately three to eight hours.

The event was an Army experimentation activity rather than evidence of completed production or operational fielding. No production quantity, procurement contract, service-entry date, or permanent operator has been confirmed for the system.
