KRI Nanggala (402) History
KRI Nanggala (402) was an Indonesian Navy submarine commissioned in 1981, known as "Nanggala II." This Cakra-class submarine was constructed in Germany and had a displacement of 1,285 tons on the surface and 1,390 tons underwater. It featured powerful diesel engines, allowing it to reach speeds of 11 knots on the surface and 25 knots underwater, with a range of 9,400 miles. The submarine was equipped with advanced radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems.
With a crew of approximately 50, including six officers, KRI Nanggala could remain at sea for about 50 days before needing resupply. Its armament included 8 torpedo tubes and 14 torpedoes, and it later gained anti-ship missile capability. Throughout its career, the submarine participated in various naval exercises, patrols, and intelligence-gathering missions.
Tragically, on April 21, 2021, KRI Nanggala was lost during an exercise when it disappeared beneath the ocean's depths. Despite being located by sonar, the submarine was found at a depth greater than its rated capability, resulting in the loss of its entire crew of 53 people. This incident marked a significant and somber moment in the submarine's history.
