History
The F127 is a planned German Navy air-defense frigate class intended to replace the three F124 Sachsen-class frigates. Its principal missions are long-range fleet air defense and ballistic missile defense, including the planned ability to intercept ballistic missiles outside the Earth's atmosphere.
The current design is based on the TKMS MEKO A400 concept and is being developed through A400 FC GmbH with TKMS, Rheinmetall, German defense authorities, and the German Navy. By September 2026, the design had grown to almost 178 m in length and more than 12,000 tonnes displacement to accommodate its sensors, weapons, combat system, and required electrical, cooling, space, weight, and growth reserves.
The current plan calls for eight ships equipped with 96 Mk 41 vertical-launch cells, the AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar, and an AEGIS-based integrated combat system. TKMS states that, if a contract is awarded promptly, the first ship could be delivered in the mid-2030s.
Development
The programme originated in 2018 as the Next Generation Frigate – Air Defence, or NGFrig-AD, requirement for a successor to the Sachsen class. Germany and the Netherlands signed a letter of intent on 17 December 2020 under the Future Air Defender effort, but the two navies later followed different requirements and schedules.
TKMS presented the MEKO A-400 AMD concept in 2024 as a basis for the German requirement. That early concept was approximately 160 m long, displaced about 10,000 tonnes, and was associated with 64 Mk 41 vertical-launch cells. A joint industrial structure was subsequently created to support development of the F127 design.
In December 2024, Germany released initial funding for preparatory F127 work. By late 2025, reporting indicated that the planned force had increased from five ships plus one option to eight ships and that missile capacity had been expanded from 64 to 96 Mk 41 cells. The additional 32 cells represented a 50 percent increase in vertical-launch capacity and required further growth in the hull and supporting systems. Naval News reported that the project remained in the negotiation and feasibility-study phase at that time.
On 1 September 2026, TKMS announced that the F127 design had been significantly advanced in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Defence, the German Navy, BAAINBw, and industry partners. The company stated that the ship's size was driven by the required sensors, effectors, command and weapon-control systems, and the necessary energy, space, weight, and future growth margins. TKMS also confirmed that the design was intended to provide long-range air defense and ballistic missile defense, including interception of ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere. TKMS stated that the first ship could be delivered in the mid-2030s if the contract is awarded promptly.
Secondary reporting has cited 2034 as a possible first-delivery target, while the manufacturer's September 2026 statement uses the broader mid-2030s timeframe. The programme therefore remains a development and procurement project rather than an operational ship class.
Design
The current F127 design is an enlarged derivative of the MEKO A400 concept. Reported dimensions are 177.99 m in length, 24 m in beam, and 7.8 m in draught, with displacement exceeding 12,000 tonnes. The increase from the earlier MEKO A-400 AMD concept is associated with the larger missile battery, four fixed AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar faces, additional fire-control equipment, an AEGIS-based combat system, and increased electrical, cooling, stability, space, and weight requirements.
Propulsion and endurance
The planned propulsion system uses a combined diesel-electric and gas arrangement driving two shafts with controllable-pitch propellers. Reported maximum speed is 32 knots, while electric-only operation is planned at speeds of about 18 knots. Reported range is about 4,000 nautical miles, or approximately 7,408 km. Published endurance figures vary between about 21 days and more than 30 days, indicating that final operating assumptions are still subject to refinement.
Crew and aviation facilities
The ship is planned for a core crew of approximately 180 personnel with 50 additional berths. Aviation facilities are intended to support two NH90 MRFH or Sea Tiger helicopters. The design includes one conventional hangar and one flexible hangar that may be used for unmanned aircraft or modular equipment. Two 11 m rigid-hull inflatable boats are also planned.
Sensors and combat system
The F127 is planned around an AEGIS-based Integrated Combat System and the AN/SPY-6(V)1 active electronically scanned array radar. The planned installation uses four fixed S-band radar faces. The Mk 99 fire-control system is associated with two AN/SPG-62G directors, while the design reportedly retains space and interfaces for a future X-band radar array.
Additional reported sensors include the AN/SPQ-9B radar and Hensoldt SPEXER-2000 3D Mk III. Atlas Elektronik bow and towed-array sonars are planned for underwater surveillance and submarine detection. Electronic-warfare equipment is also expected to evolve across the class, with reporting indicating different planned systems for the first two ships and later hulls.
Armament
The current design provides 96 strike-length Mk 41 vertical-launch cells, with 64 cells forward and 32 amidships. Planned weapons for the vertical-launch system include ESSM Block II, SM-2 Block IIIC, SM-6 Block I, BGM-109 Tomahawk, IRIS-T HYDEF, and future ballistic-missile-defense interceptors. The exact operational loadout has not been finalized and would depend on the mission.
The ship is also planned with two Mk 49 Mod 5 launchers for RIM-116 RAM close-in defense missiles and eight canister-launched anti-surface missiles identified in reporting as NSM and/or 3SM. Gun armament is planned to include one Mk 45 Mod 4 127 mm gun and two Mk 38 Mod 4 remote weapon stations. Underwater armament is reported to include two triple MU90 torpedo launchers and SeaSpider anti-torpedo weapons. Provision has also been reported for a future laser weapon rated above 100 kW.
Program status
As of September 2026, the F127 remained under development and had not entered construction or service. The programme was being developed in close coordination with German federal defense authorities and the German Navy. A400 FC stated that about 90 percent of programme value creation could take place in Germany, including shipbuilding, system integration, sensors, propulsion, and electronics.
The current plan reported by multiple sources is for eight ships. They are intended to replace three Sachsen-class frigates while providing a substantially expanded fleet air-defense and ballistic-missile-defense capability. The class is also intended to contribute as a mobile naval component of NATO integrated air and missile defense.
