History

The YJ-9ER is an extended-range variant of China's YJ-9 lightweight air-launched anti-ship missile, manufactured by Hongdu Aviation Industry Corporation. The YJ-9 family traces its origins to the 1990s, when Hongdu and CASIC Third Academy independently initiated small anti-ship missile programs. The export version, designated TL-10, was unveiled at the 2004 Zhuhai Airshow, while the domestic YJ-9 first appeared in Chinese media reports in 2013. The YJ-9ER was unveiled by China and was reportedly displayed publicly at the 2026 Egypt International Airshow.

Design

The YJ-9ER is designed to give naval aviation greater stand-off capability against small, fast-moving surface combatants such as patrol vessels, fast attack craft, and missile boats. The reported principal improvement over the base YJ-9 is a doubling of engagement range: 30 km when launched from helicopters and 60 km from fixed-wing aircraft, compared with 15 km and 30 km respectively for the earlier version. The base YJ-9 reportedly weighs about 105 kg, measures 2.58 meters in length, and carries a warhead of around 30 kg at a subsonic speed of Mach 0.7 to 0.85. The precise dimensions, propulsion characteristics, warhead configuration, and total weight of the YJ-9ER have not been independently confirmed, and publicly available information has not established whether the range increase results from changes to propulsion, missile aerodynamics, flight management, or a combination of modifications.

Program Status

The YJ-9ER's public appearance does not establish that it has entered operational service with the People's Liberation Army Navy. Its production status, deployment schedule, completed qualification testing, and compatibility with specific Chinese helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft remain unconfirmed. The reported 30 km and 60 km engagement ranges are publicly described performance figures rather than independently demonstrated operational capabilities. The PLA Navy has previously demonstrated Harbin Z-9D helicopters armed with the base YJ-9 during exercises involving moving surface targets, and in 2025 YJ-9 missiles were carried by Harbin Z-20F helicopters on Chinese ships, indicating potential integration platforms for the extended-range variant.
